The University of Wales, Newport has been running an annual writing competition for over 10 years and the 2013 competition will be starting in the Autumn.
The competition is split into two - one for entrants from Schools and Colleges and the other for entrants from current Newport students. Within each there are two categories - Stories and Poems. Total prize money is usually £600, for both Schools and Colleges and current Newport students, with prizes for the top three winning entries in both categories.
Linda Ruhemann, programme leader for the BA (Hons) Creative Writing course at Newport shortlists and then the winners are chosen by an outside judge, which is different every year. In 2011 the former Poet Laureate Sir Andrew Motion was the judge and this year it was Poet Simon Armitage whose work is studied widely in schools and universities.
