Annual Writing Competition

The University of South Wales has been running an annual writing competition for over 10 years and the 2013 competition is now open.

The competition is split into two - one for entrants from Schools and Colleges and the other for entrants from current University of South Wales students.

Linda Ruhemann, programme leader for the BA (Hons) Creative Writing course at Newport, shortlists, and then the winners are chosen by an outside judge. This year we are very pleased to announce that John Hegley, the highly popular performance poet, comedian, musician and songwriter, has kindly agreed to choose the winners. John Hegley will also present this year’s prizes prior to a reading of his own work at an awards event on Thursday14th March 2013.

There is no charge to enter the competition and prize money totalling £600 is being offered.  £150 first prize, £100 to the runners-up and £50 for highly commended will be awarded to the top three entries in the two categories of short story and dramatic monologue/poetry.  As a tribute to this year’s guest, titles of two of John Hegley’s best-loved poems have been selected as set titles for competition entries in the two categories: choose either ‘Deep in Shallow Waters’ or ‘Very Bad Dog’.  Multiple entries across both categories are allowed.

The closing date for entries for the writing competition is Monday 4th February 2013.  Please note, it is a condition of entry that winners at all levels must be willing and able to attend the private lunch and have their photographs taken for publicity purposes, as well as agreeing to have their work published on the University website and possibly in Pan magazine.
