Leadership, Governance and Management

Through effective leadership, governance and management the University of Wales, Newport is able to be nimble, agile and flexible in its relationships with its staff and students, businesses, other education providers, key government agencies and the communities in which the University is located and which it serves.

There are a variety of bodies within the University that enable it to run effectively and ensure that it is meeting the needs of students, employers and Government alike.  From the Board of Governors, which is the body legally responsible for the running of the institution, through to the Students’ Union, which is independent of the University but comprised of its students as members, there are a range of people who make sure the University offers the very best possible student experience in all its facets, whilst recognising that the key relationship is that between academic staff and the students in whom they nurture a life-long interest in studying their field.

Distributed Leadership

The University of Wales, Newport is a self-critical academic community and operates on the basis that leadership is distributed throughout the organisation according to the locus of expertise.  Follow the links on the left of this page to learn more about the bodies that lend leadership, governance and management to the effective operation of the University for the benefit of society.

Academic Board

Leadership on academic matters is exercised by the Academic Board, which is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor and includes the Deans of School in its membership.

Students’ Union

The Students’ Union is independent of the Institution but contributes to its leadership and governance through representative seats on Academic Board and the Board of Governors.  The executive team of the Students Union also meets each term with the Management Board.

Vice-Chancellor

The Vice-Chancellor is the Chief Executive of the Institution and is supported by a senior executive team, the Directorate, which ensures through its leadership that there is coherence across the academic, learning support, regional and international development, financial and human resource functions of the Institution so that resources are focused on the academic success of the Institution.

Board of Governors

The Board of Governors delegates executive authority to the Vice-Chancellor for the operational functions of the Institution but remains responsible for the probity with which the Institution meets its charitable objects and uses public funding for the purposes for which it has been granted.  Accordingly, the Board of Governors, which has independent members from industry, commerce, third sector and the public sector in the majority amongst its membership, lends a further critical faculty in ensuring that the senior executive and the Academic Board are exercising their responsibilities in leading the academic community.
