Collaborative Funding

There are many programmes operated by the University which are designed to encourage and assist companies and organisations to use the services available within universities. Many of the programmes are aimed at assisting small and medium sized companies (SMEs).  An SME is defined as employing less than 250 people, having an annual turnover of less than €40M (approximately £30M) or assets of less than €27M (approximately £20M), and having no more than 25% of their capital owned by a larger firm.)

Below are some programmes operated by the University of Wales, Newport which you may find appropriate to your business or organisation:

Strategic Insight Programme (SIP)

SIP is a collaborative programme across Wales, funded by HEFCW (Higher Education Funding Council for Wales), which  encourages innovation and facilitates interaction between university staff and public, private and voluntary sector organisations to establish long-term strategic links.

For the last 3 years it has been highly successful in bringing together universities and external partners to form mutually beneficial partnerships.  Businesses have gained a fresh perspective and access to the university’s vast resources and expertise, whilst the university has benefitted through current, real-world experience for staff, feeding back into course content and student employability skills.

The programme provides seed funding to buy out staff time to undertake short-term placements, creating a supportive environment and allowing time to work together to build trust, discuss strategic issues and generate ideas.  This time also allows future collaboration to be explored, for example joint funding bids, knowledge transfer projects or commercial projects.
