Welfare State 2008

The Welfare State in 2008 formed part of a major commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Welfare State. The project was organised by staff from the Social Ethics Research Group based in the School of Social Sciences and from the Centre for Community and Lifelong Learning at the University of Wales, Newport’s Caerleon and Tredegar campuses.

We  invited 60 people from a range of backgrounds, ordinary people as well as noted public figures, to offer thoughts on how the Welfare State appeared to them today. We hope that the 60 contributions will form a panoramic view of the scope and limits of the Welfare State, and of its contemporary significance. These contributions were presented as part of a ‘rolling’ series throughout the length of the project from July 2008 until February 2009.
