Newport Graduate School officially launched
11-06-2012
A new facility that encourages and promotes research has been opened at the University’s Caerleon Campus.
Newport Graduate School aims to provide opportunities for research development and support for graduate students, university staff and visiting professors for collaboration and reflection.
The School is located in the recently refurbished top floor of the library, and offers flexible space for tutorials, meetings and seminars, as well as hot-desking and café facilities.
Professor, Stephen Hagen, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), officially opened Newport Graduate School and said: “This facility is the embodiment of Newport’s vision of being a university that welcomes and encourages research.
“We already have a very good and strong track record for research, and the Graduate School will enable us to carry out further collaborative work by becoming the forum for future research proposals.
“Its opening is an important milestone in allowing people to tap into the knowledge and expertise available at Newport.”
The Graduate School is set to become the home of Newport’s research community, which includes postgraduate research (PGR) and postgraduate taught (PGT) students.
Professor Hefin Rowlands, Dean of Research & Graduate Studies at the University, said: “Newport Graduate School has been operational since August 2011, and we have been working very hard since then to encourage staff and students to use the space.”
“The number of PhD students is ever growing, which shows the breadth of research that’s going on across the institution, and we are here to continue supporting their professional development.”
Prof Rowlands thanked Dr Bela Arora, Associate Director for the University’s Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT), David Topping, Graduate School Web Manager, and Vaida Andrijauskaite, Graduate School Administrator for their help and support in the running of the new facility.
To mark its opening, the Graduate School is offering free coffee mornings every day at 11am to encourage researchers to use the space and discuss their work.
