Newport University appoints new Chaplain
22-11-2011
The University of Wales, Newport has announced the appointment of Reverend William Ritchie as its new Chaplain. Father Ritchie comes from a role as a pastoral worker on behalf of the Church in inner city London.
Originally from the Republic of Ireland, Father William’s interests include education, interfaith work and youth and community activities, leaving him well placed for the diverse role of University Chaplain.
Father William will take up the post on the 8th January following the departure of current Chaplain, Father Mark Soady, who leaves the University to take up his new role as Vicar of the Abergavenny Group of parishes.
Commenting on his appointment, Father William Ritchie said: “Since my first exploratory visit until now I have been overwhelmed by the welcome I have received in Newport. I am grateful for the confidence Bishop Dominic has placed in me in appointing me to this diverse role.
I look forward to working with Lawrence and his team and Bishop Dominic and his team for the good of all at the University and the Parish of All Saints. I have never worked in the Church in Wales or in a University setting before so it will be a steep learning curve for me but I know there is a good team to assist and encourage me continuing Fr Mark’s good work as we all travel forward.”
The Right Reverend Dominic Walker, Bishop of Monmouth said: “In partnership with the University of Wales Newport, I shall look forward to licensing the Revd William Ritchie as chaplain to the university. University chaplains not only provide pastoral care but also remind a university that education is about developing the whole person - intellectually, culturally and spiritually.
“Father Ritchie comes to Newport with a fine record of ministering to people of different cultures and backgrounds. I am sure that he will build on the good foundations laid by his predecessor, Father Mark Soady and that he will become a welcome presence in the university.”
Father Mark Soady said: “While I’m very sorry to be leaving the University for pastures new, I’m delighted that Fr William will be taking over from me. I’m very proud of what the chaplaincy has achieved already and I wish Father William all the very best on building on the work that we have already begun.”
Lawrence Wilson, the University’s Head of Student Services said: “I am delighted that William is joining the university at this time and bringing with him a wealth and diversity of experience that will be of great benefit to the students and staff at Newport.
“The role of the Chaplain here is a key one in terms of supporting students throughout their studies in terms of pastoral care and spiritual development as well as working with staff at all levels in the university. William will continue to build up further the strong relations we have with our communities in and around Newport.”
