Other Dyscovery Centre News

The Dyscovery Centre is now based at the University of Wales, Newport, on the  Caerleon Campus, as a part of the School of Education.

Professor Amanda Kirby leads the team of health and educational professionals providing research, assessment services and training.

Professor Kirby in 2009 presented at the 8th International Conference on Children with DCD in Baltimore, USA. This important conference gave an opportunity for Professor Kirby to present recent Dyscovery Centre research to an international audience and hear the latest research in the field of DCD.

During 2009 a successful holiday scheme has been running for children from across the U.K. and Ireland with a range of specific learning difficulties. The children have created, filmed and presented their own TV programme, cooked yummy food, become superheroes for the day and had masses of fun in a safe, therapeutic environment.

Recruitment has now closed for the 'Genes and DCD' research project. We hope that this project will help us understand more about the genes related to DCD and may help us learn how to better support children with DCD and their families in the future. We would like to thank all families that helped us by taking part in the project. The results are currently being analysed and we hope that findings will soon be published in international journals.

Training has been delivered to The Football Association, Afasic in Scotland, Afasic in Wales, Careers Wales West, Coleg Gwent, Somerset Dyslexia Association, Dyspraxia Association in Ireland, WASP-DCD.

2010 is already busy with lectures planned for Holland and Australia.Research in executive functioning and work based learning  and much more. The launch of websites boxofideas and move627 will keep the team busy.
