‘A new vision for an inclusive digital and creative economy’

IAB in the newly restructured UWN: fusing arts and business

IAB is entering the next exciting phase of its work in the context of the new structure at UWN featuring the Faculty of Arts and Business (FAB).

The Institute is a central part of the vision for FAB and to this end is fully integrated into the digital and commercial orientation of the new Faculty.

The setting is UWN’s state of the art multi-million pound city centre campus, which provides a hothouse setting for improved collaborative ways of working for students and staff.

The campus design fosters a free flow and interactive environment in which new ideas and approaches can be developed, researched and brought to market.

Students and staff have multiple spaces where they can work together to build creative products, applications and solutions.

IAB, with its established record of linking academia, policy and business, is integral to these processes aimed directly at addressing the Welsh Government’s agenda of building a digital, creative and inclusive economy.

World class film, photography and digital media

FAB ensures that IAB’s digital brand will be strengthened and given fresh potential by integrating it more closely with the rich mix of world class film, photography and digital media that makes UWN distinctive.

The award winning work of UWN’s creatives, students and staff, has a track record in Wales and internationally. This is evidenced in its string of successful graduate start-up companies and media, business and academic partnerships, which include:

  • The BBC, the National Museum of Wales, the National Library of Wales, The Photographers’ Gallery London, the National Media Museum Bradford.
  • Indus Films, Boomerang, Mwnci Cranc, The Soundworks, Children’s BBC London, The Grierson Trust and Panasonic UK
  • New York University Tisch School of the Arts, and Columbia College, Chicago, the largest private film school in the USA, with which UWN is establishing a documentary film student exchange programme.

Newport Film School’s near half a century illustrious history, from its founding by the father of documentary film John Grierson, has created documentary and drama with storytelling at its core.

Staff and student awards include recognition by BAFTA, Royal Television Society and renowned national and international film festivals including Sundance, Annecy, Encounters, Raindance, Hot Docs and Sheffield Documentary Festival.

In 2011 Newport Film School became the only film school in Wales and one of six in the UK to be invited to become a full member of CILECT (The Centre International de Liaison des Ecoles de Cinéma et de Télévision), the international association for international film schools.

IAB’s Creative and Digital Flagship Projects

IAB is establishing a track record of innovation in the creative and digital industries through involvement in flagship projects that harness the talents of students, the expertise of staff, and the entrepreneurial skills of UWN, to impact on the market place and policy agendas at local and national government levels.
