"Welcome to the website of the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) at the University of Wales, Newport. The main focus for the CELT is to enhance pedagogic research (PedR) practice across the institution and to disseminate the research outcomes widely across the Higher Education landscape."

Professor Simon Haslett (CELT Director)

The CELT aims to:

• provide an umbrella for existing PedR being undertaken;

• provide staff development in PedR theory, methods, dissemination, and funding;

• provide exciting opportunities for staff engagement related to topical PedR issues in HE, such as collaboration, technology, sustainable development, and community learning;

• raise the profile of the institution in this strategic area for a teaching-focussed university, to become a beacon of PedR good practice.

Origins of the CELT

CELTThe CELT has its foundation in the Newport Learning and Teaching Strategy 2007-2010, which seeks to:

• “establish a University-wide research cluster to lead development in pedagogy”;

• improve “the record of dissemination of good [L&T] practice outside the institution [which] has been relatively low compared to the level of activity”;

• place “a greater emphasis on encouraging its staff to not only develop, but to disseminate the many examples of good practice in learning and teaching both within and outside the University”;

• support “staff to take an active part in:

   1. devising pedagogical research projects
   2. presenting papers at conferences and
   3. disseminating published outcomes”;

• enhance “research informed teaching”.
