  • Biography : Coral Houtman is a fiction filmmaker and theorist particularly interested in integrating theory and practice in her teaching and research. She gained her Ph.D in 2003 (University of Kent) on the subject of Female Voice and Agency in Film Adaptations. A graduate directing student at the National Film and Television School where she directed Augustine, a forty minute costume drama which won the award for Best Film 1995 at the Houston International Film Festival. She joined the University of Newport in 2001 and teaches film practice, directing and film theory.

  • Research Expertise or Interest : I am a fiction-film maker and theorist, and my research interest lies primarily in the area of practice-as-research.  My PhD concentrated on aspects of narrative and point of view, examining the practical aspects of film adaptation, in relationship to mainstream thrillers and feminist films.  I have continued to explore matters of female point of view through multi-screen emmersive narrative drama.  I am currently completing a research project consisting of a multi-screen narrative installation entitled Echo and Narcissus, working with students and fellow academics, and supported by Skillset, and researching “The Digital Media Essay”.

  • Grants Awarded :
    • Celt (Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching)  Award in 20011 for implementing the Digital Media Essay.
    • University Development Grant to support Echo and Narcissus in 2008.
    • Skillset grant to pay actors and crew for Echo and Narcissus 2009. 

  • Research Degree Examiner Appointments : I was also External Examiner for  a successful practice as research PhD in filmmaking at the Department of Drama: Theatre, Film, Television, B ol University, on June 12th 2008.
