  • Biography : Florence has taught media and film studies at several Higher Education institutions in the U.K. for over 15 years, including University of Sunderland, Coventry University and University of Glamorgan. She currently teaches documentary Film History, Theory and Practice, including producing, directing, transnational documentary and cultural representations. She is also an award winning documentary filmmaker, and has made documentary films in Cameroon and Tanzania. Her first feature-length documentary film, Sisters in Law, (co-directed by Kim Longinotto, 2005), has won over 28 prestigious awards including PRIX ART ET ESSAI at Cannes film festival; Grierson Award for Best Documentary on a Contemporary Issue; Audience Award at International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA); and Peabody Award in USA. It was short-listed for Oscar Nominations in 2006. Her films have been screened on major television channels including Channel 4 Television, More4 TV, Canal+, TV5 Monde Afrique, RFO (France), PBS (USA) and Swedish Television (STV).

  • Research Interests : Her research is mainly practice-based, and draws on ideas and concepts related to post-colonial theory, cultural representations, transnational cinemas, film audience reception, African Diaspora studies, feminism, and ethnographic film. Her films portray affirmative aspects of African people and cultures, and also celebrate how women’s work and visions are at the vanguard of social and economic development. She has also written and continues to develop text-based research on topics including African film audiences, and the visibility of African people and cultures.
