What Makes This Course So Special?
This course is unique in that it is the first of its kind, offering CPD to teachers of pupils with SEN. It will equip you with the knowledge, understanding and overall skills required to meet the needs of learners with a range of special educational needs within an increasingly inclusive educational environment.
Course Intro
This course is for you if you are a qualified teacher are looking to continue your professional development by enhancing your knowledge of professional responses to a diverse range of individual learning needs.
On the course you will develop your understanding of the four categories of SEN as described in the SEN Code of Practice for Wales (2002). You will increase your knowledge and skills for working with pupils with SEN and develop your awareness of the factors involved in developing an inclusive school. You will experience an innovative blended-delivery course, the development of which was funded by the Welsh Government as part of its Empowering Teachers agenda. You will also find that this is a flexible course which is easily accessible at a time and place that suits your needs, whether at home, at school or in another learning environment.
In addition, the course is bilingual and you may study
and be assessed through the medium of Welsh or English.
What you study
The module offers participants an insight into the aetiology, nature and impact of a range of learning difficulties and disabilities. It is of relevance to teachers both in mainstream schools and in specialist provision.
Issues addressed will include; legislation, policy, provision and practice. Changing perceptions of SEN and of related terminology, including in relation to inclusive practice and equality of opportunity, will be examined and evaluated.
The main focus is to equip participants to develop their professional responses, particularly in terms of:
• Early identification, assessment and intervention
• Maximising curriculum access and supporting high standards, including personalised pupil learning
• Promoting positive social and emotional development and behaviour and responding to the voice of the learner
• Effective inter-professional working, including with parents
Where Next?
Upon successful completion, you can transfer the 30 credits awarded to an MA Education and Linked Named Awards programme at Newport and other higher education institutions in Wales. If you are taking either of the mandatory qualifications for Teachers of Deaf or Teachers of the Visually Impaired, offered by Newport, this module may be accredited as the equivalent of the Understanding Learning Difficulties and Disabilities module.
Interview Required
Yes. All candidates will be interviewed.
Assessment
To successfully complete the accredited course students will be required to complete an assessment task, equivalent to 5,000 words, negotiated with the tutor.
