The MBA is our flagship course within Newport Business School and the student experience is of utmost importance to us - particularly in terms of the need to progress students networking skills and opportunities. Students get involved with a variety of events, such as the annual MBA conference, dinners and networking breakfasts, as well as the 'exchange@Newport' - a networking forum. Students also get the chance to attend specialist guest lectures, and also may have the chance to present to a panel for various projects.
Students can take part in events such as Enterprise Challenge, part of the University’s Enterprise week. In November 2011, for example students were introduced to an enterprise challenge, after listening to a presentation by Arthur Davies from Penderyn whiskey about starting up a business. Students then had to pitch their new business idea to a panel of judges, and the winning team was awarded the Engaging in Enterprise trophy.
Vincent Thorne is a Masters in Business Administration student. Find out more about his experience as a Postgraduate student here at Newport.
MBA Core Modules Year 1/ Part 1:
People Leadership and Management
The role of the manager today is both challenging and rewarding. The People Leadership and Management module employs contemporary management perspective, where the use of a special range of skills, distinctive attitudes and behaviours need are developed. This module attempts to identify the main elements and realities of a manager’s role for a turbulent organisational environment. The study area of People Leadership and Management seeks to explore “hard and soft” organisational issues at a variety of levels. In process terms, one of the key areas of concern is how to understand the operation of business and management and the required prerequisites for organisational development.
Operations Management:
Managerial work is complex and fragmented in its nature. The very term implies a range of behaviour from administration to leadership; as a consequence job descriptions and roles for managers may differ. This module examines the various ways in which Operations are managed within the workplace including techniques, relationships and demands. The ability of the manager to communicate effectively is of course crucial.
Financial analysis:
One of the prerequisites of a successful manager is the ability to understand and critically analyse financial information. This module creates a platform for advanced understanding and evaluation of financial information aimed at assisting managers and business owners in creating value for their organisation.
Strategic marketing:
This module aims to develop an understanding of strategic marketing in the context of a dynamic and global business environment. It has an ethos that underlines the linkages between strategic development and the marketing interface, culminating in a stance that accepts business development through market development. This view has been taken in light of the nature of contemporary business models and societal shifts – where entrepreneurial organisations develop value with customers in a wide variety of contexts, but increasingly through technology mediated social networks and tribal constructs.
Core module Year 2/Part 2:
Strategic Leadership & Business Transformation
Modern organisations exist within an increasingly competitive environment over much of which they exercise little or no control. Successful leaders are expected to anticipate and respond to environmental turbulence – capitalising on emerging opportunities, minimising the impact of adversity and actively managing transformational change. This module explores strategic and effective leadership in the context of the dynamic and complex environment in which it operates
All students are taught at the brand new City Campus, which is purpose built with cutting edge design and excellent teaching facilities.
