 Leadership & Management (PcET) MA

What Makes This Course So Special?

It will develop knowledge and understanding of the PCET sector, which is varied and dynamic in its nature. A truly interesting programme which has much to offer students from a number of PCET backgrounds.

Course Intro

This course is for you if you are currently working within the Post-compulsory sector of education sometimes referred to as the Learning and Skills Sector, or Lifelong Learning sector. It is also for you if you are a graduate or a non-graduate with relevant experience.

The several names for the sector reflect its varied and dynamic nature, and while it is often defined as all provision available after the age of 16, it also, increasingly, is seen to include some 14+ provision.

On this course you will have the opportunity to analyse up-to-date trends, changes and experiences in the sector and the many debates associated with them. You will deepen and broaden your professional understanding and confidence, and provide a basis for further work you may undertake, in your professional role, in development, evaluation or research.

In addition, you will also learn from others in the group, and will be encouraged to share good practice and develop links with colleagues from other organisations.

What you study

In common with all of the MA Education programmes, you will take the core module Research Methodology.

In addition, to achieve the MA Leadership and Management (PcET) you will also study:

Values, purposes and policies in PcET
The concentration will be on Wales but where appropriate the UK, Europe and the wider world will form part of the study. You will critically examine the background to and reasons for policy initiatives, which typically involve both clear values and principles and more pragmatic considerations.

You will study two more modules. At least one of which should be from the options below. You may choose one relevant module from within the MA Education programme.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment
This focuses on the monitoring, evaluation and review of learning, to secure school improvement and raise standards of pupils’ achievement.

Developing People in Organisations
This module should appeal to those working as (or aspiring to be) leaders in institutions with an educational setting. Topics covered include team building, effective leadership, appraisal and mentoring and managing change in organisations.

Strategic Management and Accountability
Topics covered are institutional vision, managing change and strategic plans and their implementation.

Upon successful completion of the above taught element, you will progress to:

Dissertation
A research-led study of a topic related to current practice in PcET.

To complete the full MA you will present a 17,000 word research dissertation and a 3,000 word research dissemination plan.

A programme specification for this course is available.

Where Next?

A Masters degree is required for professional advancement in numerous occupations, and is widely seen as evidence of a successful commitment to high level professional development. An MA award demonstrates that you have developed advanced level skills in analysis, evaluation and research.

If you are interested in the possibility of a higher degree by research in education your tutors will be pleased to discuss the opportunities for doing so here at Newport.

Interview Required

Yes. An informal interview is desirable to assess students’ individual needs and ensure the programme matches interests and/or career development.

Assessment

All modules are assessed through coursework. The assignments all relate theory to practice and carry equal weight.

Student Soundbite

“The tutor was helpful and approachable; modules and assessments are interesting and thought provoking. The programme is positive for individual self development.”
