At the University of Wales, Newport we believe that we can play a major role in embedding the health message within our university community and encourage staff and students to make small changes towards a happier and healthier lifestyle. The University Medical Centre has supported the Welsh Assembly Government’s Health Challenge Wales campaign since it was launched in February 2004. We recognise that the wellbeing of our community matters and can make a difference to the student experience. There are also clear links between investment in the health of the workforce and a number of benefits to the organisation.
In 2009 the Healthy Campus initiative was established in partnership with the University Sports Centre to promote a positive approach to health and wellbeing on campus. Throughout the year the Medical Centre organises health promotion events which encourage people to take responsibility for their own health in order to lower their risk factors to poor health in the future. Part of this initiative is the annual health fair which is held on the Caerleon campus in March. The fair offers people the opportunity to have free taster sessions for alternative therapies, massage, beauty treatments as well as providing information and advice on health issues.
