Accounting at Newport 


Newport Business School (NBS) has been acclaimed for the excellence of its Accountancy programmes for almost 40 years; the School has offered tuition for the ACCA and CIMA professional accountancy qualifications since the early 1970’s. We are an ACCA Platinum Approved Learning Partner, a CIMA Learning Quality Partner and an ICAEW Partner in Learning. We are also one of only a few colleges nationwide who are able to offer an internally assessed course for all of the ACCA Fundamentals Level papers. Further, we are the first public sector tuition provider in Wales to offer ICAEW tuition.

The School offers undergraduate Accounting degrees, an MSc in Accounting and ACCA, CIMA and ICAEW professional programmes. We also offer a suite of Finance short courses (‘Governance Best Practice’, ‘Cash Management’ and ‘Accounting for Non-Financial Managers’) plus CPD/technical update training.

Newport Business School received the prestigious ‘Public Sector Accountancy College of the Year’ award at the 2012 PQ Magazine Awards and a Newport tutor was shortlisted for the ‘Lecturer of the Year’ Award, meaning that Newport’s achievements have been recognised at the PQ Awards for three years in a row. At the 2011 Awards, a Newport ACCA Year 4 student won the PQ ‘Student of the Year’ Award. Further, Newport was runner up in ‘Public Sector Accountancy College of the Year’ Award and a Newport tutor was shortlisted for the ‘Lecturer of the Year’ Award. At the 2010 Awards, Newport received the ‘Public Sector Accountancy College of the Year’ Award, and a CIMA student was short-listed for the PQ ‘Student of the Year’ award.

In the CIMA examinations sat in May 2011, a Newport student achieved 6th place in the world for her overall performance in the CIMA Strategic Level examinations and came 10th out of 4,701 in her CIMA Financial Strategy paper. Further, Accountancy at Newport achieved excellent scores in the National Student Survey 2011 (the sample included BSc Accountancy, plus ACCA and CIMA). Overall Satisfaction was 96%, and scores were above sector averages (often considerably so) in the majority of categories. Newport’s provision came joint 5th in the UK in the Overall Satisfaction category, joint 5th in UK for Teaching and joint 3rd in UK for Assessment & Feedback. Further, it was joint 1st in Wales for Overall Satisfaction and Teaching.
