Jennifer graduated from the BA (Hons) Documentary Film & Television course in 2006.
Jennifer Cox was born in 1984 in Marbella, Spain - the youngest daughter to a Spanish mother and an Irish father. It is in Marbella where she began to play with cameras and tell stories with pictures. She came to Newport Film School in 2003.
She joined the documentary course in the third year having spent two previous years on the film drama course. Jennifer brought a rigorous fine art bias to her filmmaking on documentary and flourished in her final year, producing two startling and provocative films:
“My experience with the Documentary course was, I suppose, an unusual one as I was originally studying Film and decided to swap degrees just before the last year. This was not a rash decision. At the end of my second year in Film I felt like I had been meandering from place to place whilst searching for a place to fit in, looking for people to listen to me and my ideas and more importantly, looking for the freedom to execute them.”

Jennifer Cox at Newport Film School - 2005
“As soon as I spent my first day amongst the documentary students and tutors I knew that I was in the right place. I was allowed to make films that I really believed in without having to be tied down to inflexible and impersonal briefs and what is best, I was pushed forward to improve not only as a film maker but as a person. My classmates were creative, friendly and open and my tutors would always walk the extra mile to help me with my films. The words “Be Brave” and “believe in yourself” were embedded in each word of advice I was given in my third year and I now see that year as a training ground in which I gained the confidence I needed in order to deal with the 'real world' and to find my own voice within film making. I believe that, in my case, this is the best thing that university could have given me, as those are the basic principles that have helped me to get through all the projects I have done in my professional career. The only thing I do regret is that I didn't change to DOC in my first year!”

After graduation Jennifer returned to Spain and currently lives and works in Madrid. Jennifer has begun to carve out a successful career in photography and film, both as a gallery artist and producing bespoke films for a range of designers, musicians and companies.

Mi Mala Estrella (Jennifer Cox)
Jennifer features prominently in her work as a central character – a way of working she explored on the documentary course.
“Memory, to me, seems inaccurate, vague and futile, as soon as something takes place it is swept away and replaced by a new experience and this is why I long to capture and observe everything, always striving to preserve every memory, feeling and moment in a square piece of paper.”
Jennifer is passionate about the cameras she uses. In her photography she avoids the seduction of digital immediacy and continues to shoot on film.
“I always take my personal photographs with a 1970s camera. I try not to let gimmicks distract from me from the important thing, which is what I want to say and how I want to say it. I think that at the moment many films and photographs are just about impressing people with new technology and special effects but, in my opinion, they forget about the content. I use a different array of cameras, I even own a flashy digital one and I am not afraid to use it when the project calls for it as I am aware that each camera and technique is a tool that I have to put to the service of a good story or at least use them in order to create images that move and compel the spectator.”

Wilderness (Jennifer Cox)
“Right now I'm quite busy, this week I have been shooting a TV advert for a film festival that concentrates on ecology and sustainable means of production. Next week I'm opening my second solo exhibition in Barcelona and then, in three weeks time, I'm shooting my new project: I'm making a mood piece for Viveka Goyanes, a very talented Spanish fashion designer. I've managed to make some very different creative people come together for it, I have a great location and even a white angora cat for it, so I'm really excited!”
We wish Jennifer every success with her incredible imagery and films.
