Post-compulsory Education & Training - BA (Hons)

What Makes This Course So Special?

The course was re-validated in May 2009 and this allowed the course team the opportunity to update or remove existing modules and to introduce new subject areas deemed essential within this rapidly changing sector. This course may be the only means by which many working in PcET can obtain graduate status. Where possible, students will be provided with opportunities to select modules that have direct relevance to themselves and to the environments in which they operate. There is also the opportunity to network with colleagues in other areas of PcET and to investigate and appreciate the diverse range of teaching/training methods that exist within the sector.

Course Intro

The purpose of this award is to give those working in post-compulsory education and training the opportunity to achieve graduate status. It will broaden and deepen your knowledge of educational and training issues and give you the necessary skills to progress within your profession. It is a programme of personal and professional development that attracts students from a wide variety of backgrounds, including further education, adult and community education, the police and health services, private training providers and voluntary and charitable organisations.

The course takes into account the changes within the PcET/Lifelong Learning sector and within the organisations that comprise that sector. Sociological, technological, economic, environmental and political factors influence the nature and scope of change and the course examines these factors and their impact upon organisations, learners and tutors. Critical analysis is paramount to an understanding of the driving forces behind change and participants are actively encouraged to undertake such analysis of their own organisations and the sector in general.

The course attracts students from a broad range of occupations, from those teaching as unqualified teachers in Further Education colleges,  those in a work-based learning setting such as hairdressing and sports coaching, public sector training such as the police, health service and prison service as well as the voluntary sector.   This dynamic mix is a key strength of the course that will enhance your learning and development through the sharing of good practice, learning experiences and skills.

Mo Hodge (left):  "This qualification will give me a better understanding of teaching when doing my job and working with children in my role as a Paediatric Community Nurse."

Roy Newman (right) :  "The support of the tutors and other students in the cohort provided a constant flow of encouragement making it a very worthwhile and memorable experience."

Journier Taylor (middle):  "My career has progressed in a way that it couldn't have done without the qualification."

A commitment to empowering learners and supporting them to meet their goals has been a driving force behind the outstanding achievement of Coleg Gwent’s Wendy Roberts.

As a Support Technician at Newport City Campus, Wendy works alongside students with a diverse range of learning difficulties.  Keen to develop her teaching skills and professional practice Wendy successfully completed her Certificate of Education in 2007, a nationally recognised qualification for non-graduates who work in further education and the broader post-compulsory sector.  with the encouragement of her tutor Martin Williams, she progressed to the BA (Hons) Post-compulsory Education & Training (PcET) and this year has graduated with first class honours.

“Throughout I have been actively encouraged by my tutors to reflect on my own practice with the added benefit of being able to tailor the course and choose modules that have been most relevant to my own professional development," said Wendy.  "One important aspect of teaching I have developed into my practice is that of differentiation.  Being able to accommodate the different learning styles and needs of the students I support means they achieve, progress and reach their potential.”
