Course Intro

Sports Coaching involves developing individual or team sporting talents through instruction and physical / mental training.  This process of athlete development starts with the development of the individual coach.  Understanding coaching roles and responsibilities is a fundamental part of coaching and is essential if a coach is to lead and support people to improved sports performance.  As a sports coach becomes more experienced, coaching philosophy develops which influences decisions and actions.

You will increase your knowledge and understanding of theoretical and practical aspects that support professional coaching.  This includes how the athlete develops through coaching, analysing performance and more. In the practical sessions you’ll enhance your abilities in delivering coaching sessions to meet athletes’ individual needs. You will also participate in practical assessments, fieldwork placements and have the opportunity to gain additional National Governing Body Coaching Qualifications.

Additional benefits include use of local facilities offered at Newport’s International Sports Village which include Velodrome, swimming pool, indoor tennis centre and more.

John Townsend, Graduated 2009 – BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching
“After attaining a 2:1 in Sports Coaching in 2009, I went on to work for the UK’s leading company in Outdoor Pursuits and Activities as an Instructor. The course has facilitated the professional tools and attitudes needed to work in the busy sports sector. On a daily basis, I typically instruct BMX sessions, rope activities, archery, rifles and more. I have also undertaken a role as a Physical Exercise Specialist on one of the leading child obesity prevention schemes in the UK.
I chose Newport for its locality; its small but vibrant nature in a rapidly developing city. Newport has a huge long-term outlook and wide range of opportunities and links within sport. It also has an extremely animated social scene with events, sports and entertainment that cater for all types of people and are very accessible.
For me, the most significant part of studying at Newport was knowing that although you are a self-sufficient student with the freedom to take responsibility for your own studies, you the support networks in place which is very reassuring. The lecturers, University staff and Students’ Union really do go the extra mile to ensure your time at Newport is worthwhile, enjoyable and satisfying.
I am thrilled that the University has provided me with the credentials for pursuing a career in the sporting industry and anticipate a return to study an MSc in the future.”
