What Makes This Course So Special?
The course provides you with the opportunity to explore areas such as Young People and the Youth Justice System, Community Sport and Physical Activity, Global Youth Work and Community Development, Promoting Health and Well Being to Young People and more.
You will have the chance to experience practical work placements if you are not already employed in the either the Youth, Community, Social Care or Educational sectors. If you already work within one of these sectors then you may be able to use your current role for the placement.
You will have the opportunity to work with young people and to build on your current experience. You will learn from the experienced Youth and Community lecturers and enhance your understanding of the principle and ethics of youth and community work.
The emphasis is on flexible learning that enables you to continue to work while you study. There is a blended learning approach comprising face to face lectures, workshops and tutorials, as well as practical experience and ‘e’ learning. This enables you to realistically link theory to practice.
The foundation degree can be taken by attending lectures just one day a week for two years. Alternatively, you can choose to study part-time over a longer period. We can advise you on this depending on your circumstances. The course will run in Tredegar on Tuesdays 9.30am - 4.30pm, starting on 28 September 2010 (with breaks for school holidays).
Course Intro
The demand for skilled and qualified experts to work with young people has increased significantly following the Welsh Assembly Government’s 2009 Children and Young People’s Workforce Development Strategy. The vision is for the creation of a workforce that has the skills, confidence and competence to meet the needs of vulnerable children and young people in England and Wales.
You will develop the skills, confidence and knowledge in order to be able to effectively support the development of young people in informal settings. You will put what you learn in class into practice through work placements. You will develop a clear understanding of the issues facing young people from all walks of life on a daily basis.
