SECONDARY TEACHING TASTER DAYS

Are you wondering whether secondary teaching is the career for you?


Then why not come along to a Secondary Teaching Taster Day.  The Taster Day is open to those wishing to gain an insight into secondary teacher training and are considering an application to one of the secondary teacher training undergraduate courses offered at the University of Wales, Newport for 2011 entry.  These courses are:

Certificate of Higher Education Introduction to Secondary Teaching
BSc Secondary mathematics with science or ICT with QTS (2 years)
BSc Secondary science with mathematics or ICT with QTS (2 years)
BSc Secondary design & technology (3 and 2 year routes)
PGCE Design & Technology

Our undergraduate secondary teacher training courses are unique in Wales and attract a wide range of applicants including:

• People who have successfully completed at least one year of a degree, including 
  HNC and HND level study, and who now wish to change direction
• Career changers
• Those who have had career breaks and are looking for new opportunities
• People who have discovered as an adult a flair for mathematics, science, design
  and technology or ICT but who have few or no academic qualifications
• Graduates with a degree that is not relevant to the national curriculum  
• Those with qualifications gained overseas

What does a Taster Day include?

• Information on the different routes into teacher training
• Information on the range of courses offered at Newport
• Guidance on the application and interview process
• Time with course tutors to discuss individual queries

Plus
A minimum of 4 hours in a local secondary school where you will:
• Observe lessons
• Gain an understanding of the work of a teacher
• Talk to newly qualified and senior teachers
• Find out about the roles and responsibilities of a teacher
• Gain some understanding about the school curriculum

How long is the day?

The Taster Day will begin at 9.15am and after a brief  welcome you will be taken by minibus to a local Partnership School.
At around 3.00pm you will be collected and return to Caerleon Campus where you will have the option to talk about your school experience and  ask any questions you still have in your mind.

You may talk to our course tutors individually, should you wish to. The day will finish around 4.15 pm.

How do I apply?

Details will be published when the next Taster Day date is confirmed. 

'Prepare to Teach'   courses for graduates also operate in Wales developed as a collaborative venture between the University of Wales, Newport (among others) and the Open University. The course includes six days school experience. Participants will be required to complete subject study modules and compile a professional development portfolio.
